The Chosen, Episode 3

 

In the biblical narrative, as the Israelites embarked on their journey from slavery to freedom, Moses found himself burdened with the task of judging the people and resolving their disputes. The people sought him out from morning until evening, reflecting a pivotal moment in their transition from a life devoid of choices to a new era of discerning values.

 

성경의 이야기에서 이스라엘 백성이 노예에서 자유를 찾아 떠나는 여정을 시작하면서 모세는 백성을 심판하고 분쟁을 해결해야 하는 막중한 임무를 떠맡게 됩니다. 백성들은 아침부터 저녁까지 모세를 찾았고, 이는 선택의 여지가 없는 삶에서 가치를 분별해야 하는 새로운 시대로 전환하는 중요한 순간이었습니다.

 

Moses' father-in-law, witnessing the overwhelming responsibility placed on him, questioned the nature of this arrangement. In the absence of a predetermined path, the Israelites turned to Moses to understand God's will and sought guidance in establishing God's statutes and regulations.

 

모세의 장인은 그에게 주어진 막중한 책임을 목격하고는 이에 의문을 제기합니다. 정해진 길이 없는 상황에서 이스라엘 백성은 하나님의 뜻을 알기 위해 모세에게 의지했고, 하나님의 율법과 규례를 세우는 데 필요한 지침을 구했습니다.

 

This process mirrors the essence of worship, which involves a profound rearrangement of values. Worship, at its core, entails shifting the center of gravity from personal perspectives to the Word of God. The term 'Mishpatim' in Hebrew, denoting God's laws, emphasizes the establishment and judgment of these divine principles in the lives of the community.

 

이 과정은 가치관의 심오한 재배치를 수반하는 예배의 본질을 반영합니다. 예배의 핵심은 개인의 관점에서 하나님의 말씀으로 무게 중심을 옮기는 것입니다. 히브리어로 하나님의 법을 뜻하는 '미쉬파팀'은 공동체의 삶에서 이러한 신성한 원칙의 확립과 판단을 강조합니다.

 

To bring the Word into one's life, internalize its teachings, and align values with it is akin to a meaningful trial. This concept diverges from the modern understanding of trials as legal proceedings; instead, it emphasizes a collective effort to establish a 'Mishpatim'—a community committed to aligning its values with God's laws.

 

말씀을 삶으로 가져와 그 가르침을 내면화하고 가치관을 일치시키는 것은 재판의 의미와 유사합니다. 이 개념은 법적 절차로서의 재판에 대한 현대적 이해와는 다른 개념으로, '미쉬파팀', 즉 하나님의 법에 가치를 맞추기 위해 헌신하는 공동체를 구축하기 위한 집단적인 노력이 필요합니다.

 

Rather than a solitary judgment of good and evil, this process involves communal engagement, seeking answers, and solving life's challenges through prayer and collective discernment—a fundamental need for God's people.

 

이 과정에는 선과 악에 대한 단독적인 판단보다는 공동체와 함께 답을 구하고 기도와 함께 분별함으로 삶의 문제를 해결하는 것이 포함되며, 이는 하나님의 백성에게 근본적으로 필요합니다.

Jethro’s Advice

Jethro spoke directly to Moses, "Moses, what you're doing is not wise. You and the people will exhaust yourselves if you continue like this. Teaching the laws and regulations alone, in isolation, is not good. It's time for a significant change. We need to come together, think collectively, improve as a community, and unite in sharing our values and judgments. This hierarchy where you alone make decisions needs to be reconsidered.

 

이드로가 모세에게 직접 말했습니다. "모세, 자네가 하는 일은 지혜롭지 못하네. 이렇게 계속하면 자네와 백성들은 모두 지칠 것이야. 율법과 법도를 혼자서 가르치는 것은 좋지 못하네. 이제는 큰 변화가 필요한 때야. 함께 모여 집단적으로 생각하고, 공동체로서 발전하고, 연합하여 가치와 판단을 공유해야 하네. 혼자서 결정을 내리는 위계 질서는 다시 생각해 볼 필요가 있어.

 

Applying laws and rules without unity can turn them into weapons of division. True justice comes from thinking together, giving thanks together, solving problems together, rejoicing together, and even crying together. The pyramid structure, where you alone decide, might provide control, but true effectiveness and stability come from a united body. This is the structure where God can truly work.

 

연합 없이 법과 규칙을 적용하면 분열의 무기가 될 수 있다네. 진정한 정의는 함께 생각하고, 함께 감사하고, 함께 문제를 해결하고, 함께 기뻐하고, 심지어 함께 우는 것에서 비롯되지. 혼자 결정하는 피라미드 구조는 통제할 수 있지만, 진정한 효율성과 안정성은 연합된 지체에서 나온다네. 이것이 바로 하나님이 진정으로 일하실 수 있는 구조이지.

 

I want to share with you the standard of true ability. It's not about power for its own sake; it's about fearing and honoring God. A sincere person, faithful and living by the words of truth—the Alpha and Omega—is the one to follow. The people competent men who reject unrighteous gain, refuse to let money be the standard of life.

 

나는 자네와 진정한 능력의 기준을 나누고 싶어. 그것은 권력 그 자체가 아니라 하나님을 경외하고 공경하는 능력이야. 알파와 오메가이신 진리의 말씀에 충실하고 그 말씀대로 사는 진실한 사람이야말로 우리가 따라야 할 사람이지. 불의한 이득을 거부하는 사람들은 돈을 삶의 기준으로 삼는 것을 거부한다네.

 

Moses, transform your leadership and governance based on these divine principles. Move from solitary decision-making to a united, communal approach.  You need to keep a sharp eye out for competent men—men who fear God, men of integrity, men who are incorruptible—and appoint them as leaders.

 

모세, 이 신성한 원칙에 따라 리더십과 거버넌스를 혁신하세. 독단적인 의사 결정에서 단합된 공동체적 접근 방식으로 전환하며 유능한 사람, 즉 하나님을 경외하는 사람, 청렴한 사람, 부패하지 않는 사람을 잘 살펴서 지도자로 세우게."

 

"Moses, if you heed this advice and act according to God's commands, you will endure, and the people will find their place in peace. Discovering one's place signifies the completion of the Exodus journey. Ultimately, it is the promised land, Canaan, and the heavenly realm. This revelation is the key to our collective purpose.

 

"모세, 자네가 이 충고에 귀를 기울이고 하나님의 명령에 따라 행동한다면 자네도 일을 쉽게 처리할 수 있을 것이고, 백성들은 평안하게 자신의 자리로 돌아갈 것이네. 자신의 자리를 찾는다는 것은 출애굽 여정의 완성을 의미하지. 궁극적으로 그곳은 약속의 땅 가나안과 천국이며. 이 계시는 우리 공동의 목적의 핵심이네".

To achieve this, we must establish a community that realigns our values—a trial community that transcends hierarchy, encourages mutual inquiry, and seeks unity. This community is not only a gathering for trials but a community of life, bound by a worship that receives the power of the Lord. It becomes the key to opening the door of the covenant, later bestowed upon Moses on Mount Sinai.

 

이를 위해 우리는 우리의 가치를 재정립하는 공동체, 즉 위계를 초월하고 서로 묻고 일치를 추구하는 재판 공동체를 세워야 합니다. 이 공동체는 재판을 위한 모임일 뿐만 아니라 주님의 능력을 받는 예배로 묶인 생명의 공동체입니다. 이 공동체는 훗날 시내산에서 모세에게 수여된 언약의 문을 여는 열쇠가 됩니다.

 

In this transformative community, the cross of Jesus, becoming the standard by which we weigh our actions. Sins are forgiven, weaknesses are covered, and the cross becomes the guiding principle. Through this communal commitment, we forge a covenant that echoes the divine covenant given to Moses, creating a space where the values of forgiveness, understanding, and the redemptive power of the cross prevail.

 

이 변화하는 공동체에서 예수님의 십자가는 우리의 행동을 저울질하는 기준이 됩니다. 죄는 용서받고, 약점은 덮어주며, 십자가가 인도하는 원칙이 됩니다. 이러한 공동의 헌신을 통해 우리는 모세에게 주어진 신성한 언약을 반영하는 언약을 맺어 용서와 이해, 십자가의 구속력이 우세한 공간을 만듭니다.

 

In essence, the establishment of this trial community, a community of life, and a worship community becomes the culmination of our Exodus journey.

 

본질적으로 이 재판 공동체, 생명 공동체, 예배 공동체의 설립은 출애굽 여정의 정점이 됩니다.
