And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done
for Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.

In last week’s Daily Torah, Beshalach, God brought Israel out of Egypt and parted the Red Sea to save them from Pharaoh and the Egyptians. God provided for the needs of His people in the wilderness by raining down manna from heaven and bringing forth water from a rock.
지난 주 매일 토라인 베샬라흐에서 하나님은 이스라엘을 이집트에서 이끌어 내시고 홍해를 갈라 파라오와 이집트인들로부터 그들을 구해 주셨습니다. 하나님께서는 하늘에서 만나를 내려주시고 반석에서 물이 솟아나게 하심으로 광야에서 백성들의 필요를 채워주셨습니다.
This week, in Parasha Yitro, Moses’ father-in-law, Yitro (Jethro), comes from Midian along with Moses’ wife and two sons to meet him at the Israelites’ camp after hearing of all the great miracles that God had performed to deliver His people.
이번 주 파라샤 이드로에서는 모세의 장인 이드로가 하나님께서 자기 백성을 구원하기 위해 행하신 모든 위대한 기적에 대해 듣고 모세의 아내와 두 아들과 함께 미디안에서 이스라엘 진영으로 모세를 만나러 온다는 이야기가 펼쳐집니다.
Jethro, meaning a remnant or one who remains, leads his family and livestock across the desert, embodying the essence of excess and abundance. As a representative figure symbolizing the Gentile remnant, Jethro undertakes the journey with a purpose—to unite with Israel. The significance of his name, Reuel, highlighting his friendship with God, adds depth to the narrative.

In this symbolic journey, Jethro's decisive wisdom shines through as he doesn't hesitate to bring Zipporah and her sons to Moses. This act of joining Moses, despite the hardships of the journey, encapsulates the overarching theme of spiritual connection and familial support.

Jethro visits Moses
Jethro: Moses, my son-in-law, I come to you with your wife and her two sons.
이드로: 내 사위 모세여, 아내와 두 아들을 데리고 왔다네.
Moses: (With reverence) Father! (Bows down and kisses Jethro)
모세: (경건하게) 아버지! (허리를 숙여 이드로에게 입맞춤)
They ask how each other is doing, share the joy of meeting each other, and enter the tent.
서로에 대한 안부를 묻고 만난 기쁨을 나누며 장막안에 들어갑니다.
Moses: (Inside the tent) Father-in-law, I have much to tell you. The Lord has done remarkable things for us. He delivered us from Pharaoh and the Egyptians.
모세: (장막 안에서) 장인어른, 드릴 말씀이 많습니다. 주님께서 우리를 위해 놀라운 일을 행하셨습니다. 우리를 파라오와 이집트인들로부터 구해 주셨습니다.
Jethro: (Listening humbly) Share with me, Moses. I am eager to hear of the Lord's deeds.
이드로: (겸손히 경청하며) 내게 말해주게. 주님의 행적에 대해 듣고 싶구나.
Moses: (Recounting the journey) It has not been an easy path. We faced hardships on the way, but the Lord, in His mercy, delivered us from every trial.
모세: (여정을 이야기하며) 쉬운 길은 아니었습니다. 도중에 고난이 닥쳤지만 주님은 자비로 모든 시련에서 우리를 구해 주셨습니다.
Jethro: (Rejoicing) Praise be to the Lord for His goodness to Israel, for delivering us from the hands of the Egyptians.
이드로: (기뻐하며) 이스라엘에게 선하심을 베푸시고 우리를 이집트인의 손에서 건져내신 주님을 찬양하라.
Moses: Your presence brings comfort, Father. Your humility in listening to our journey speaks volumes.
모세: 당신의 존재가 위로를 줍니다. 우리의 여정에 귀 기울여 주시는 당신의 겸손함이 큰 힘이 됩니다.
Jethro: (Smiling) Moses, my son, we must express our gratitude and praise to the Lord. Our meeting is not just a formality. It signifies a sharing of words through the Holy Spirit.
이드로: (웃으며) 모세, 내 아들아, 우리는 주님께 감사와 찬양을 드려야 한다. 우리의 만남은 형식적인 것이 아니라 거룩한 영으로 인한 말씀의 나눔을 의미하지.
Jethro: (Nodding) Indeed. Let our words be filled with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Through the Holy Spirit, we communicate and submit to one another in this divine relationship.
이드로: (고개를 끄덕이며) 우리의 말이 시와 찬미와 신령한 노래로 가득차게 하소서. 거룩한 영을 통해 우리는 이 신성한 관계속에서 서로 소통하고 복종하자꾸나.
Moses: (With gratitude) Your wisdom, Father, is a guiding light. Let us continue to talk, praise God, and strengthen our bond as we navigate the journey ahead.
모세: (감사하며) 아버지, 당신의 지혜는 인도하는 빛입니다. 앞으로의 여정을 헤쳐 나가는 동안 계속해서 이야기하고 하나님을 찬양하며 우리의 유대를 강화합시다.
In this conversation, Moses and Jethro share not only the events of the Exodus but also the deeper spiritual connection that binds them in gratitude and praise to the Lord. Zipporah' s enlightenment
Oh, my dear Gershom, Eliezer, Grandpa is quite something – always so wise. He saw right through how those other nations were treating Israel, calling it pride.
나의 사랑하는 게르솜, 엘리에셀, 할아버지는 정말 대단한 분이야. 항상 현명하셨지. 할아버지는 다른 나라들이 이스라엘을 어떻게 대하는지 꿰뚫어 보셨고, 그것이 바로 교만이라고 말씀하셨어.
And then, something amazing happened. Grandpa, can you believe it, took the lead in our worship service. He offered burnt offerings and sacrifices to God, right there in the camp. It was the first time we all worshiped together, and what surprised me most was that it was the Gentiles, not Israelites, who kicked off this beautiful worship scene. Grandpa, being a holy priest, turned our usual time with the tabernacle into a full-on celebration of worship.
그리고 놀라운 일이 일어났단다. 믿어지니? 할아버지가 예배를 인도하셨어. 할아버지는 바로 그 진영에서 하나님께 번제와 제물을 드렸어. 우리 모두가 함께 예배를 드린 것은 처음이었는데, 가장 놀라웠던 것은 이 아름다운 예배의 시작을 이스라엘 사람들이 아닌 이방인들이 열었다는 것이야. 거룩한 제사장이었던 할아버지는 성막에서 보내는 평범한 시간을 온전한 예배의 축제로 바꾸어 놓았단다.
You should've seen him, boys. Even though he was exhausted from the journey, Grandpa put worship and praise before anything else. It was like he transformed the whole atmosphere, making it all about God and not our tough circumstances. A true man of God, leading by example.
얘들아, 할아버지를 봤어야 했어. 할아버지는 여행으로 지치셨지만 그 무엇보다도 경배와 찬양을 최우선으로 하셨어. 할아버지는 우리의 힘든 상황이 아닌 하나님에 관한 모든 것이 되도록 전체 분위기를 만들어 주셨어. 진정한 하나님의 사람으로 모범을 보이셨지.
I just stood there, watching him, and I realized that he fulfilled his mission as a remnant of the Gentiles. Grandpa shifted the focus to worship, opening a door none of us expected. It wasn't just about rituals; it was about connecting with God in a way that goes beyond our backgrounds.
그 자리에 서서 할아버지를 지켜보면서 할아버지가 이방인의 남은 자로서 자신의 사명을 다하고 있다는 것을 깨달았단다. 할아버지는 예배에 초점을 맞추셨고, 우리 중 누구도 예상하지 못했던 문을 열었어. 그것은 단순한 의식이 아니라 우리의 배경을 뛰어넘는 방식으로 하나님과 연결되는 것이었지.
Even when we were all tired and weary, Grandpa stood strong, showing us the importance of putting worship ahead of our own needs. It was a lesson, my boys, a lesson in devotion and resilience. I couldn't help but feel proud and grateful to have a grandpa like him, showing us the way in this wild journey through the wilderness.
우리 모두가 지치고 피곤할 때에도 할아버지는 굳건히 서서 우리 자신의 필요보다 예배를 우선시하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 보여주셨어. 아들들아, 그것은 헌신과 회복력에 대한 교훈이었다. 이 거친 광야의 여정에서 우리에게 길을 보여주신 할아버지가 계셔서 자랑스럽고 감사할 수밖에 없구나.
