Then Judah approached; the heart of echad

“Then Judah came near [Vayigash וַיִּגַּשׁ] unto him and said,

‘Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. 

Do not be angry with your servant,

though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.’” (Genesis 44:18)

This story begins with a plea from Judah, brother of Joseph, on behalf of his younger half-brother, Benjamin. A silver cup had been deliberately hidden in Benjamin’s bag by Joseph, causing Benjamin to be in danger of having to remain a slave in Egypt.

 

이번 이야기는 배다른 동생 베냐민을 대신해 요셉의 형 유다의 탄원에서 시작합니다. 요셉이 고의로 베냐민의 가방에 은잔을 숨겨 놓아 베냐민은 이집트의 노예로 살아야 할 위험에 처하게 되었습니다.

 

In the dimly lit chamber, the air hung heavy with tension as Judah, weathered and worn, approached the powerful figure seated upon the throne. Joseph, adorned in the regal garments of an Egyptian administrator, gazed down with an inscrutable expression, his eyes betraying no hint of the familial connection he shared with the men standing before him.

 

피곤하고 지친 유다가 보좌에 앉은 강력한 인물에게 다가가는 동안  희미한 조명이 켜진 방 안은 긴장감으로 무거운 공기가 감돌고 있었습니다. 이집트 행정관의 왕실 의상을 입은 요셉은 헤아리기 어려운 표정으로 아래를 내려다보는, 그의 눈빛은 그 앞에 서 있는 형들과 혈연임을 조금도 내색하지 않습니다.

 

The flickering torchlight danced upon Judah's face, revealing lines etched by years of hardship and sorrow. His eyes, a mix of desperation and determination, searched Joseph's countenance for any sign of recognition. The room echoed with the muted whispers of courtiers and the distant hum of a city grappling with the impending famine.

 

일렁이는 횃불이 유다의 얼굴 위에서 춤을 추며 수년간의 고난과 슬픔이 새겨진 주름을 드러냈습니다. 절박함과 결단력이 뒤섞인 눈빛으로 요셉의 얼굴을 살폈습니다. 방에는 신하들의 나지막한 속삭임과 닥쳐온 기근에 시달리는 도시의 윙윙거리는 소리가 메아리쳤습니다.

 

Judah's voice trembled slightly as he began to speak, his words carrying the weight of a father's anguish and a brother's remorse. "Mighty one," he addressed Joseph with a respectful yet pleading tone, "we stand before you as humble supplicants, driven by the specter of hunger that haunts our land. We have journeyed far, guided only by the hope of procuring sustenance for our kin."

 

유다가 말을 시작하자 목소리가 약간 떨렸고, 그의 말에는 아버지의 고뇌와 형의 회한이 담겨 있었습니다. 그는 정중하면서도 간청하였습니다. "전능하신 분, 저희는 우리 땅을 뒤흔드는 굶주림의 망령에 이끌려 당신 앞에 겸손한 간구자로 섰습니다. 오직 우리 친족을 먹여 살릴 수 있다는 희망에 이끌려 먼 길을 왔습니다."

 

Judah's voice quivered with desperation as he laid bare the intertwined fates of his aged father, Jacob, and the youngest son, Benjamin, who stood as the sole living reminder of a lost brother. The weight of responsibility pressed upon Judah's shoulders, and he implored Joseph with raw sincerity.

 

연로한 아버지 야곱과 잃어버린 형제를 유일하게 기억하게 하는 막내아들 베냐민의 얽힌 운명을 말하는 유다의 목소리는 절망으로 떨렸습니다. 책임감이 유다의 어깨를 짓누르고 그는 요셉에게 진심을 다해 간청했습니다.

 

"Imagine, my lord, the fragility of our familial thread," Judah began, his words carrying the burdens of generations. "We have a father who has weathered the years, his strength waning with each passing day. In his aged heart, he cradles the pain of a lost son, and now, only Benjamin remains—a child born of his late years, a cherished soul. His love for Benjamin is a lifeline, connecting the old man to a hope that springs from the innocence of youth — seeing how his life is bound up with the boy’s life — ."

 

"나의 주여, 우리 가족의 연약함을 상상해 보십시오." 유다는 대대로 내려온 짐을 짊어진 채 말을 시작했습니다. "우리에게는 세월의 풍파를 견디며 날이 갈수록 기력이 쇠약해지는 아버지가 있습니다. 노쇠한 아버지는 아들을 잃은 아픔을 가슴에 품은채, 이제 말년에 낳은 소중한 베냐민만 남았습니다. 베냐민에 대한 그의 사랑은 노인을 젊음의 순수함에서 솟아나는 희망과 연결해주는 생명줄입니다. 아버지의 목숨과 이 아이의 목숨이 이렇게 얽혀 있습니다. "

As Judah recounted the tumultuous chapters of his life, the memories weighed heavily on his conscience. The echoes of his past misdeeds reverberated and then his journey led him to Adullam.

Judah recalled the tragic fate of his sons, struck down by God for their transgressions. The death of his wife cast a shadow over his existence, and he retreated into the desolation of a cave.

 

유다가 격동적인 삶의 장을 회상할 때, 그 기억은 그의 양심을 무겁게 짓눌렀습니다. 과거의 악행의 메아리가 울려 퍼졌고 그 여정은 그를 아둘람으로 이끌었습니다. 하나님께 멸망당한 그의 아들들의 비극적인 운명을 회상하며 아내의 죽음은 그의 존재에 그림자를 드리우고, 황폐한 동굴에서 은둔합니다.

 

Then, the reminiscence took an unexpected turn as Judah sinks into the courageous act of his daughter-in-law, Tamar. A woman who risked her life to secure the promise of lineage, disguising herself as a prostitute in an act of audacious faith. Tamar's actions stirred a profound recognition in Judah, an acknowledgment of the lengths one would go to fulfill a covenant.

 

그의 기억은 며느리 다말의 용기 있는 행동으로 파고들면서 예상치 못한 방향으로 흘러갑니다. 혈통의 약속을 지키기 위해 목숨을 걸고 창녀로 변장하여 대담한 믿음의 행동을 한 여인. 다말의 행동은 유다에 깊은 인식을 불러일으켰고, 언약을 지키기 위해 어떤 대가를 치를 수 있는지를 보여 주었습니다.

 

Judah's life, once lived regardless of the covenant, found new purpose and meaning as he stood once again at the center of that sacred pact.

 

언약과 무관하게 살았던 유다의 삶은 그 신성한 계약의 중심에 다시 한 번 서면서 새로운 목적과 의미를 찾았습니다.

 

His encounter with Joseph, offering himself as collateral for Benjamin, became a pivotal moment. In this act, Judah discovered a deep secret—that everyone could live. The sacrifice, the redemption, and the realization of the covenant's significance were threads woven into the fabric of his memory.

 

베냐민을 위해 자신을 담보로 제공한 요셉과의 만남은 결정적인 순간이 되었습니다. 이 행위에서 유다는 모든 사람이 살 수 있다는 깊은 비밀을 발견했습니다. 희생과 구속, 그리고 언약의 의미에 대한 깨달음은 유다의 기억 속에 실타래처럼 엮여 있었습니다.

 

In Judah actions, the parallel with the sacrifice of Jesus emerged, a profound connection between giving one's life to save others. The narrative unfolded not just as a personal recollection but as a Yeshua's redemption, echoing themes that transcended time and circumstance.

 

유다의 행위는 예수님의 희생과 유사하게, 다른 사람을 구하기 위해 자신의 목숨을 버리는 것과 깊은 연관이 있습니다. 이 이야기는 개인적인 추억이 아닌 예슈아의 구원으로 펼쳐지며 시간과 상황을 초월하여 울립니다.

As Judah grappled with the impending anguish that the separation from Benjamin would inflict upon his father, he stumbled upon the heart of echad—the oneness that bound them all. 

 

유다는 베냐민과의 이별이 아버지에게 가져올 임박한 고통과 씨름하던 중, 그들을 모두 하나로 묶은 하나됨인 에하드의 마음을 발견했습니다.

 

In his approach to Joseph, Judah began to unravel the mystery of echad . The selfless act of offering himself as collateral for Benjamin was a transformative moment. Yeshua, too, was willing to risk his life for the sake of another, echoing the divine sacrifice inherent in the story of God the Father giving His Son, Christ, for the salvation of humanity.

 

유다는 요셉에게 다가가면서 에하드의 비밀을 풀기 시작했습니다. 베냐민을 위해 자신을 담보로 내놓는 행동은 변화의 순간이었습니다. 예슈아 역시 다른 사람을 위해 자신의 목숨을 기꺼이 내놓으셨습니다. 이는 인류의 구원을 위해 아버지 하나님께서 당신의 아들 그리스도를 주신 희생입니다.

 

The journey of Judah became a testament to the living meaning of echad. As he stood before Joseph, Judah stood not just as a man seeking redemption for past mistakes but as a vessel through which the eternal truth of echad  pulsed, keeping the flame of unity alive.

 

유다의 여정은 에하드의 살아있는 의미를 보여주는 증거가 되었습니다. 요셉 앞에 섰을 때 유다는 단지 과거의 잘못에 대한 속죄를 구하는 사람이 아니라 에하드의 영원한 진리가 고동치며 화합의 불꽃을 살아있게 하는 그릇으로 서 있었습니다.
